Wedding week attire

Somehow, incredibly, we are now less than two weeks away from the wedding! (Two weeks from today will be our  Day After wedding brunch!)  I have been so busy prepping for the wedding and with just with LIFE (summer camps for our kid, extra guest lectures and workshops around town, teaching two classes), that I've hardly even had time to keep up on Sapphic Bride related news.  

We are getting close to finishing off all our details though! Yesterday we picked up my dress, our child's dress, and my bride-groom's special vest, all handmade for our individual bodies by the fabulous Chrissie Wai-Ching.  With those outfits now complete (or nearly complete, as Chrissie is also making shawls for us, and I still need rhinestone earrings for my little maiden of honor), last night I took inventory of our outfits for the entire WEDDING WEEK. So many parties! So many photo opportunities! So I created a grid with all three of our names on it, marking the events from Wed. Sept 1 (cocktail party), Thurs. Sept. 2 (rehearsal and rehearsal dinner), Friday Sept. 3 (THE WEDDING!!), Sat. Sept. 4 (wedding brunch and then dinner with my new inlaws!), Sun. Sept. 5 (party at my parents' house for all the family and friends who are still in town). This sort of serious social calendar requires a serious fashion plan. On that note, I'm posting a newsflash about Katy Perry's plans for wedding attire. She will not be wearing latex, it seems ...

Katy Perry won`t wear latex wedding dress

Singer Katy Perry said she won't be wearing a latex dress on her wedding day.

Perry, 25, will marry British comic Russell Brand, 35, later this year and said latex is definitely out of the question.

She said to PEOPLE: 'I'm definitely not going to get married in latex. When I wear latex onstage, I sweat. I could wring out those dresses - and I don't want to do that at my wedding.'

The rumours started when Perry said earlier this year that latex was one of her favourite fabrics.

Speaking to Access Hollywood, she said: 'The latex is probably the most comfortable thing I ever wear because it just sticks on you.

'You sweat a little bit, but it's like a perfect fit! It makes you look extra skinnier than you are.'

Sapphic Bride and Groom on Reality TV?

We'll see! ... Last weekend when my lovely girl and I went for another Chrissy Wai-Ching fitting (BTW still hyperventilating every time I see and try on those dresses) -- we were met at the door by a camera crew. They were actually friends of Chrissy's, helping her in making a demo for production companies who have expressed interest in a reality TV show about her shop. Oprah, Discovery Channel, MTV were all mentioned. .... I'm actually not sure how it would make a full, ongoing show.... but not for me to decide. In the meanwhile it was fun to get interviewed ... Chrissy also said that she knows the editor of Seattle Bride, so we're going to follow up with her on getting that contact!

I nearly hyperventilate every time I look at this website; going to her studio is even more overwhelming and fun. The problem, if I can even call it that, is that there are too many choices! And she can alter and mix anything you want ... so it's a matter of finding the best aspects of different dresses and pulling them together for my body and style ...

I think I've found my dressmaker

This afternoon I met with Chrissy Wai-Ching in her Pioneer Square artist loft. I think she's my go-to girl for this dress situation. Organic silk, original designs, tailored for my body. funky. queer friendly. and far more affordable than the fancy designer boutiques.

As I was walking to her studio from my car, a man approached me and said he wanted to give me his phone number: "I'd love to take you out to dinner," he said. I said, "thanks, but I'm taken, and actually I'm on my way to try on wedding dresses" and showed him my ring. He immediately backed away and said, "well at least you can take the compliment with you."

A few months ago, when I started this blog and started posting photos of dresses, I posted one by Chrissy Wai-Ching  (the one with the blood red silk coming out of the bottom layers) . I didn't know it was her design at the time, I just thought it was rad. Just today, on Easter sunday, I was feeling a bit bereft as I often do on this day, and I decided to look for her online. I found the most inspiring wedding dress website I've come across yet. Full of gorgeous, funky, gorgeous, funky dresses. AND she is located in an artist loft downtown, probably no more than one mile from my house. I am psyched. Check out some of these designs. I can't wait to visit her studio. Unfortunately her website isn't letting me cut and paste any of her dress photos but we can see her website here .

Vera Wang gowns

Vera Wang definitely seems to be at the head of the bridal game these days .... here are some gorgeous gowns I just found on her website .... and what I'm realizing after gazing at lots of gowns online is that i may want to steer away from off-white altogether (i never considered pure "white" -- never wear the color in everyday life so why would i wear it on my wedding?) . pewter, gold, champagne, rose -- these are all more my style ..... yum

Logan Neitzel says he's not fit for Middle America. Guess what Logan, neither is the Sapphic Bride!

Seattle fashion designer Logan Neitzel was booted off "Project Runway" Thursday night. He made it to the final six on the Lifetime TV reality show.

The challenge for the contestants was to create a companion piece to complement their previous winning pieces. It was a feisty episode, in which contestants accused each other of stealing ideas — dubbed "Zippergate" and "Sweatergate" on fashion blogs online after the show. Designer Althea Harper accused Neitzel of copying her zipper-collar design, while Irina Shabayeva accused Harper of stealing her oversized sweater idea. In the end, Harper won with a sweater-jacket and pants ensemble.

Stuck in the bottom two with Christopher Straub, Neitzel created what he called a "powwow piece," a zipper dress he said he wanted singer Pink to rock out in someday. But he was quickly pegged down when guest judge Nick Verreos described the outfit as "Judy Jetson," and Neitzel was sent packing. Upon leaving, Neitzel concluded that he was not fit for "Middle America."

lovin' the spring 2010 fashion shows

L.A. fashion week is on....

and woah, check out this "bridal gown"!!!! (that's what they're calling it). Then again, this particular fashion show is called "Skin Graft" .... 

I'm also seeing fashion shows in Canada and India -- but this gown is the most eye catching thus far....

Attention local fashion designers: I have a deal for you ....

After about a week of hard wedding labor (looking at wedding dresses online and a visit to a couple absolutely nauseating hetero-phile bridal stores --help! taffeta high school prom nightmares!) .. I have realized that: a) normal bridal stores make me want to barf (more on that later, as that's really a story about wedding culture in general....) and b) I like nice dresses. Really really nice, like Milan fashion runway nice. But those dresses cost more than the last car I bought.

So here's the deal: I am looking for a cool fashion designer (ideally local, but I will take one from Paris or Tokyo if i must) ...who will lend me a fabulous dress for my wedding. In exchange, I will make your dress look GOOD. I will model your dress and your line, promote you in the press, sing your praises to my friends, my readers, my manicurists .... etc. AND, you will perhaps become known for being the dress maker to the first lesbian couple featured in Seattle Bride ...

I'm officially putting the call out now ....
