Sapphic-loving Lutherans?
I grew up Lutheran and think of it really as an ethnic heritage, like my gf who grew up Jewish. It's nice to see that my tribe, at least the mainstream ELCA'ers, are becoming more open to the LOVE .... same goes with their close cousins, the Episcopalians and the United Methodists: The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (recently) accept(ed) the blessing of same-sex unions and authorize(d) gay and lesbian candidates who are in committed relationships to receive ordination as clergy members.
However of course some in the extended tribe aren't so psyched about the recent turn toward tolerance. They think that: Sex without marriage is by definition fornication, which many Lutherans believe is a sin according to Scripture. For the church to accept it, they say, is in effect for the church to condone a sin.
Um, Hello? Just let us get married then!?!
One of the conservative pastors quoted for this article describes the difference between conservative versus mainstream Lutherans: "One has to do with the historic understanding of Jesus Christ is God's answer to the human condition of sin and death, and on the other hand, the view of Jesus Christ as the bringer of justice and liberation of the oppressed in this world.
Ok, so it's a matter of focusing on sin and death, or focusing on civil rights? Hmmm, don't know about you, but I'm heading over to the civil rightsers party; let those sin-and-deathers frown, growl, and point fingers to their heart's delight!
In Sapphic love,
