Malawi couple are "pardoned", but only if they promise to break up and never fall in love again.

I'd like to thank UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon and Madonna for their assistance in freeing these men. But come on, next they NEED POLITICAL ASYLUM! Just imagine throwing a straight couple in jail and telling them that they need to break up if they want to stay out of jail.... Oh yeah, we used to do that in the US under something called anti-misegenation laws.

Blantyre, Malawi (AHN) - Two gay men jailed in Malawi have been released after a presidential pardon. The men, who had been sentenced to 14 years, were pardoned during a visit by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Steven Monjeza, 26, and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, 20, were initially jailed for "gross indecency and unnatural acts" after celebrating their engagement. The decision to have them imprisoned drew the ire and condemnation of many around the world.

The men were arrested in December of last and had remained incarcerated since. Authorities convicted the men of engaging in gay sex under a law dating back to colonial rule by Britain and sentenced to 14 years with hard labor.

Should they continue their relationship they face possible re-arrest and the pardon will not be applicable. Homosexuality is illegal in 38 of Africa’s 53 states.
